Cozy Fall Quilting in Phoenix + A Beginner-Friendly Flying Geese Quilt Pattern

Autumn in Phoenix + A New Quilt Pattern!

Autumn is my favorite season… even here in Phoenix! While we might not have the classic fall foliage, we do have cozy mornings, fall-themed fabrics, and all the seasonal comforts that make this time of year so special.

As the temperatures finally begin to cool, at least in the mornings, I’ve started my annual fall traditions: watching favorite movies and TV shows, and cuddling up with a cozy quilt. Today, I’ve got Gilmore Girls on in the background, and this weekend, I’m planning to start Anne of Green Gables. As Anne says, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” I couldn’t agree more.

Even though our days are still in the 90s, I’m leaning fully into the season with fall fabrics and quilting projects!

A Full Heart This Fall

The end of summer brought so much fullness to my heart this year. My middle son returned home from his two-year mission for our church, and with his return, all six of my kids were home at the same time! That’s only happened twice in the past five years, so I truly soaked in every moment. I couldn’t have enjoyed it more.

Monsoons & Mishaps

Fall kicked off with a couple of beautiful (and dramatic!) monsoon storms. Unfortunately, we lost three trees. Poor things didn’t have strong enough roots to stay upright in the soaked ground. We also discovered a leak in the roof, but thankfully, it didn’t require a full replacement. Our roofer was able to patch it up, and we were so grateful!

Introducing: The Southbound Quilt Pattern

I’m excited to share a new pattern with you: Southbound! This is a beginner-friendly quilt pattern that uses the four-at-a-time flying geese method. It’s a perfect project for fall!

You can use four coordinating fabrics for the geese, or go scrappy with a layer cake. I’ve included QR codes in the pattern that link to videos walking you through each step, perfect if you’re a visual learner.

To make trimming the flying geese units easier, I used the 4" x 8" Bloc Loc ruler (affiliate link), and it made a big difference! I really loved how quick and precise it made the trimming process.

As we ease into fall, whether it looks like golden leaves or just cooler mornings, I hope you're finding time to slow down, savor the season, and create something beautiful. If you're looking for a cozy and beginner-friendly project, I hope you'll give Southbound a try. I’d love to see your version, so feel free to tag me on Instagram (@katie.tmqco) or leave a comment below!

Happy quilting,
Katie
